Nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of South Carolina, Lake Jocassee is a wonderful experience for the scenic tourist as well the the wildlife adventurer. The crystal clear water that forms the 7,500 acre lake flows from several Appalachian rivers and streams making the lake a favorite for SCUBA divers as well as paddlers, explorers, tourist and fisherman. With 75 miles of beautiful shore line there is a photo opportunity waiting around every corner.
The lake lies in the Jocassee Gorge, which was once a part of the Cherokee Nation. This is reflected in the names of many of the rivers, streams and towns in the area. "Toxaway", "Keowee", "Jocassee" and "Oconee" name just a few. The Gorge and Lake are as beautiful as the legend in which it gets it's name.
The Cherokee legend tells of Jocassee, a daughter to the Chief, who fell in love with a warrior from a rival tribe. When the tribes went into battle her lover was killed by her own brother. Seeing her brother return to camp with the head of her lover, Jocassee paddled out in a canoe, stepped into the water then walked across the top of the water to meet the ghost of her lover.
Even though spring and fall are good seasons to paddle, winter is also a wonderful time to explore this scenic mountain lake and our favorite time of season. Paddling Jocassee under a gentle falling snow is an experience that will have you coming back winter after winter. For our cold weather tours we offer the comfort and warmth of a lake side villa.
